3/16"-200, 1/2 in long (0.500") Sapphire Tipped Fine Adjustment Screws are designed to create an ultra low friction environment. Base Lab Tools offers the finest 200 TPI (127µm/rev) screws available. Made in the USA. Screws and bushings are sold as matched pairs for the best fit.

These 3/16"-200, 1/2 in (0.50") long screw and matched 7/16 in (0.438") long bushing pairs are ideal for the most sensitive applications. With a pitch of 127 µm/revolution, micron and better resolution is attainable. These matched fine adjustment sets have the smoothest, most accurate movement available.
These screws are sold pre-paired to a bushing at the factory to assure the tightest fit possible and prevent debris from being caught in the threads.   Upon request, bushing can be oriented in the opposite direction.

New! Water Cooled Optical Breadboards.

6Base Lab Tools is happy to broaden our line of optical breadboards to include water cooled breadboards. We were so happy with our initial release of what will be a complete line of liquid cooled breadboards that we had to share. We are currently shipping our 6" x 6" x 3/4" Liquid Cooled Solid Aluminum Breadboards (SAB066-W) from stock, and we have a whole range of sizes on the way.

What we love about this design is that we have really thought ahead about how to make it as useful as possible. We have stuck with what we know from our extensive line of solid aluminum breadboards. We have the features you have come to expect from us.

  • Solid aluminum water cooled optical breadboard are made in the USARounded outside corners for a more safe lab environment.
  • A true 1/2" border so two breadboards may be joined together and still hold 1" spacing between tapped holes.
  • All of our breadboards have at least 5 counterbore mounting holes and the liquid cooled breadboards are no exception.
  • As with all of our tables and breadboards, they are made in the USA in our Pennsylvania facility.

Even more unique about our water cooled optical breadboards is that they have unique double counterbore mounting holes which allow them to be mounted in two ways. One way allows for direct contact with the copper tubing carrying the cooling liquid and the other allows for the the alluminum breadboard itself to be used as a large heatsink which is then cooled by the copper tubing.

All liquid cooled breadboards use standard 3/8" outer diameter copper tubing and can easily be fitted with hardware store slip fitting and plastic tubing to connect to your chiller or liquid source.

This video is part of the Base Lab Toolsfine adjustment screw tutorial page detailing how to drill and press fit a Base Lab Tools 1/4-80 fine adjustment screw bushing (TB250-80-0438) into an aluminum plate. This would be the first step in using this 1/4-80 fine adjustment screw bushing to build a custom mount or translation stage.

When weight matters what optical breadboards to use?

There are often special optical applications that restrict the weight of the optical breadboard being used. In the application the equivalent of an optical table skin can be used to reduce weight. Base Lab Tools now offers our slim solid aluminum breadboards which are only 1/4" thick for these demanding optical breadboard requirements.

The first introduction in our product line was the SAB066-S which is a slim (1/4" thick), lightweight version of our standard 6" x 6" solid aluminum optical breadboard. The SAB066-S is depicted in the schematic below:


At less than 1 pound in weight this aluminum breadboard is half the weight of Base Lab Tools standard 1/2" standard solid aluminum optical breadboards.

Base Lab Tools offer a variety of fine adjustment screws and nut/bushings where interchangeability and cost of the assembly are key parameters. The thread class for these fine adjuster screws are typical 3A/3B the tightest thread class. Note that Base Lab Tools offer adjusters that are better than class 3A/3B that will have better performance and reduce the need for “sticky” grease to accommodate for the loose tolerance. These devices will have less backlash and longer life expectancy than standard 3A/3B adjusters.
