Optical enclosures with hardboard sides are an extremely economical way to eliminate stray light from your experiment. Base Lab Tools uses our industry standard
X2020 rail system
to provide an enclosure that sells for half the price of competitive enclosures. These hardboard enclosures come partially assembled, flat packed, and can be in place installed in minutes.

Base Lab Tools enclosures are made from our X2020 series optical rails for great versatility. Our standard enclosures are bolted to the breadboard using the existing counter-bore mounting holes. Once in place, the top of the enclosure is secured with thumbscrews for tool-less access. Base Lab Tools also offers sliding doors and a variety of accessories including feed-thru panels to address cabling needs.

Design considerations:
All the X2020 rails (which make up the enclosures) are cut 5.4mm over the called out dimension. This makes it possible to use corner cubes and get an even number of inches - i.e. the X2020-09 is 9in +5.4mm long. When an X2020-C3S (cube - 20mm x 20mm) is screwed into each side, the distance between centers is 10mm + 9in + 5.4mm + 10mm = 9in + 25.4mm = 10in. A quick way to think of it is that the distance between centers once cubes are installed is the called out length of the rail plus 1 inch.
On all Base Lab Tools SAB series solid aluminum breadboards, the counter-bore holes are 1in from the border. So an SAB1212 which is 12in x 12in has counter-bores separated by 12-1-1 = 10 in. To build an enclosure taking advantage of those counter-bores one would use the X2020-09 (9in+ rail) and two end cubes to center over the counter-bores.
